Recently, Baan Water Services and China National Coal Group Ordos Energy Chemical Co., Ltd. collaborated to decide to use German ItN nanoplate ceramic membranes in the MBR units of the wastewater treatment system for coal-to-methanol production, with a treatment capacity of 9,000 m3/day. This decision was made after technical experts from China National Coal Group conducted thorough evaluations. The ItN ceramic membrane boasts advantages such as high flux, strong resistance to fouling, low energy consumption, long service life, small space requirement, fully automatic system control, and easy installation and operation. It is particularly suitable for the treatment of industrially wastewater that is difficult to treat, such as wastewater from coal chemical industries. This is a capacity expansion and optimization design project for China Coal Hubei Energy Chemicals, aiming to meet the increased water volume and quality demands resulting from the launch of the second-phase 1 million-ton methanol production project, without expanding the footprint of the existing wastewater treatment facilities. Since starting to work with ItN ceramic membranes last December, China Coal Energetic Chemicals has been attracted by their unique advantages, such as high flux, excellent quality of the water produced, a service life of up to 25 years, and the possibility of in-situ chemical cleaning (without the need for lifting). After 4 months of technical exchanges and expert evaluations, Bayan Water Services and China Coal Hubei Energy Chemicals reached an agreement, with the installation, commissioning, and stable operation of the MBR membrane units expected to be completed by the end of this year. Coal chemical industry wastewater is one of the types of industrial wastewater that is difficult to treat. It is characterized by a complex range of pollutants, high concentrations, difficulty in biological degradation, and large fluctuations in the quality of the raw water. If membrane treatment processes are used without proper system design and selection of membrane products, they generally cannot operate stably. The upgraded biochemical unit utilizes its patented EBA combined process, while the MBR unit employs German ItN nanofluidized ceramic membranes; this combination of advanced technologies provides a double guarantee for China Coal Hubei Energy to achieve stable and low-cost operation. The implementation of this project will fully leverage the advantages of ItN flat ceramic membranes, ushering in a new era for such membranes in the treatment of coal chemical wastewater and other similar types of difficult-to-treat industrial wastewater, and providing new impetus for environmental improvement in China.
