Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced the projects selected for the 2020 **Key Research and Development Program under the “Solid Waste Recycling” theme. The project titled “Efficient Gasification of Organic Solid Waste, Advanced Utilization of the Generated Products, and Related Equipment,” led by Southeast University in collaboration with research institutions, universities, and enterprises including the Northwest Institute of Chemical Engineering, was successfully approved for funding. The implementation period is from January 2020 to December 2023. The project comprises five research topics, among which Topic 4 – \"Integrated Technology, Equipment, and Demonstration for Safe and Clean Gasification-Melting of Multi-component Organic Hazardous Waste with Zero Emissions\" is being led directly by the Northwest Research Institute of Chemical Engineering to drive research and development efforts. It is reported that multi-component organic hazardous waste exhibits significant differences in physical and chemical properties. Currently, rotary kiln incinerators are primarily used to reduce the volume of solid organic hazardous waste; however, their application scope is limited. Moreover, due to the large differences in properties among multi-component organic hazardous waste, the stability during incineration is low, posing a risk of secondary pollution. As a result, it is difficult to achieve zero emissions of such hazardous waste. The project starts with zero pollution emissions and the clean utilization of resources; by utilizing carbon and hydrogen elements in organic hazardous waste, it aims to develop technologies for adapting organic hazardous waste and mixed slurries to gasification processes in fluidized bed systems, as well as for the resourceful utilization of the resulting products. It also seeks to create integrated gasification-melting technologies and equipment. Primarily through techniques such as process harmlessness control, rapid high-temperature reactions using wet gas flow bed gasification technology, and slag quenching for cooling, the organic substances in organic hazardous waste are rapidly partially oxidized to produce syngas; the inorganic components that remain unconverted are melted at high temperatures and then quenched to form harmless glassy slag. Guided by the principles of \"reduction, resource utilization, and harmlessness,\" this project focuses on the entire technical chain of \"source reduction – efficient conversion – clean utilization – advanced processing – precise management.\" It aims to develop comprehensive technologies and systematic solutions for the resource utilization of solid waste, create innovative business models for commercial deployment, and establish a series of integrated demonstration sites, thereby providing strong technical support for the safe disposal and resource utilization of hazardous waste in China.
