The world’s first plant for producing ethylene glycol from coke oven exhaust has been successfully commissioned. On July 10, 2021, good news came from Etoke Banner Jianyuan Coal Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Jianyuan Coal Chemical”). Its plant capable of producing 260,000 tons of ethylene glycol per year from coke oven exhaust has begun operating successfully, yielding polyester-grade ethylene glycol with a purity of 99.94%; all parameters meet the standards specified in GB/T4649-2018. The project utilizes the syngas-to-ethylene glycol technology provided by Shanghai Pujing Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Pujing Chemical”). The 260,000 tons per year ethylene glycol production project using coke oven gas at Jianyuan Coal Chemicals began operating its esterification compressor on June 29, with preparations underway to start ethylene glycol synthesis ; At 22:49 on June 29, the system successfully supplied oxygen in a single operation; at 02:47 on June 30, qualified dimethyl oxalate was produced and sent to the hydrogenation unit, while at 06:41 the crude ethylene glycol product was sent to the distillation unit ; At 8:00 on July 8, the entire production process was operational, and polyester-grade ethylene glycol was produced; currently, the production capacity of each ethylene glycol plant is at 95%, with the plants operating stably. This facility is the sixth industrial ethylene glycol project case authorized by Pu Jing Chemical. Using coke oven off-gas as raw material, compared to ethylene glycol produced from coal, this approach not only enables the sustainable utilization of the off-gas, is environmentally friendly, but also has lower costs, giving it strong market competitiveness. The ethylene glycol production project from coke oven exhaust gas at Ejin Horo Banner Jianyuan Coal Coking Co., Ltd., located in the Ejin Horo Economic Development Zone, utilizes the world’s first facility of its kind for converting coke oven exhaust gas into ethylene glycol. This facility enables the use of over 2.8 million tons of coke oven exhaust gas generated by the company’s coking plant for the production of ethylene glycol; once completed, it will become the largest production base for ethylene glycol derived from coke oven exhaust gas in the world. The 260,000 tons per year production of ethylene glycol in Etoke Banner through the use of coker gas from Jianyuan Coal Coking Plant employs the syngas-based ethylene glycol production technology developed by Shanghai Pujing Chemical. Designed by Hualu Engineering Company, it is the world’s first plant for producing ethylene glycol from coke oven exhaust gases. The total investment in the project is 6 billion yuan, with construction starting in 2018. In October 2020, the air separation unit was put into operation. Compared to traditional coal-based ethylene glycol projects, the investment and land requirements for ethylene glycol production from coke oven gas are relatively lower. The project construction does not involve the main equipment of the coal-to-ethylene glycol gas production unit, such as coal storage and transportation equipment, gasifiers, shift reactors, low-temperature methanol washing equipment, black water treatment equipment, sulfur recovery equipment, and liquefied gas stations; the air separation units and boilers are also smaller than those in coal-to-ethylene glycol plants of similar scale. From the perspectives of resource utilization and the environment, reusing coke oven exhaust – from being waste gas in coking plants to a raw material for the production of ethylene glycol – helps reduce environmental pollution, and is in line with the industrial policies related to **green coking and the development of new material industries. Ethylene glycol is an important chemical raw material that is widely used in industries, agriculture, and other fields. Once the project for producing ethylene glycol from the exhaust gases of Jianyuan Coal Coking’s coke ovens is put into operation, it will reduce carbon emissions by 290,000 tons per year. At the same time, it allows the company to make full use of the value of coal, enabling a circular development model that integrates coal processing, coking, and chemical production. Jianyuan Coal Coking Company was established in November 2005; it is a modern integrated enterprise invested and built by Inner Mongolia Sanwei Resources Group, covering coal mining, coal washing, coking, and chemical manufacturing ; The company is located in Qipanjing Town, Etoke Banner, Ordos City, with a registered capital of 400 million yuan; it currently has 1,200 employees ; At present, it consists of three subsidiaries: a coal washing plant with a production capacity of 3 million tons and a coking plant with a capacity of 1 million tons. The coal chemical industry chain is beginning to take shape, with products including coking coal, refined coal, medium-grade coal, as well as chemicals such as tar, crude benzene, sulfuric acid, sulfur, and pure benzene, toluene, xylene, and other substances produced through the refining of crude benzene.
