The Xufeng Heyuan DMC Green Chemical Project is expected to begin trial operations next May. Author/Source: Gasification World. Date: 2022-12-01. Clicks: 25. The project aimed at utilizing the exhaust gases from the electric arc furnaces in the Xufeng Heyuan Chemical Plant to produce new energy materials, as well as making use of carbon dioxide – commonly referred to as the “DMC Green Chemical Project”. Since its commencement on June 1, 2022, progress on this project has been smooth. Currently, the civil construction work is in its final stages, with equipment being shipped out one after another. On October 27, the first static equipment arrived and was installed. On November 22, with the 40-meter-high cold box successfully lifted into place, it marked the transition of the project from civil construction to the equipment installation phase. The target set by the group company is to have the carbon dioxide recovery unit ready for testing by the end of 2022, and the DMC unit ready for testing by May 2023. Project Overview: The project utilizes the existing electric arc furnace exhaust gases from Xufeng Heyuan Chemical Co., Ltd. as well as the already operational methanol production facility as raw materials. Through purification, high-quality CO is obtained, which is then sent to the DMC production unit. There, methanol undergoes a liquid-phase carbonylation reaction in the presence of CO and O2 to produce DMC. The project utilizes the liquid-phase oxidation carbonylation technology owned jointly by China Five Rings Engineering Co., Ltd., Hubei Yicarbon Chemical Technology Consulting Co., Ltd., and Tianjin University. According to the information disclosed in the environmental impact assessment, a portion of DMC reacts via transesterification with purchased ethanol to produce methyl ethyl carbonate and diethyl carbonate, while methanol is generated as a by-product. Another portion of the DMC is sold as industrial-grade and electronic-grade products. It is estimated that the overall cost of DMC upon completion will be below 3,500 yuan per ton, representing a reduction of over 1,500 yuan per ton compared to the mainstream transesterification process used in China. The carbon dioxide utilization project involves recycling the CO2 gas generated by the low-temperature methanol washing process associated with Asahi Kasei’s existing methanol production facilities, to produce food-grade liquid CO2 and dry ice. The project to produce 150,000 tons of methanol using the gas from Xufeng Company’s existing closed-type electric arc furnaces at Inner Mongolia Xufeng Heyuan Chemical Co., Ltd., was designed by Saiding Company. Driving in September 2020. In this process, the conversion is carried out using Hunan Anchun Company’s patented isothermal sulfur-free conversion technology for high CO levels; the CO (on a dry basis) content in the feed gas is over 75%, making it the synthetic gas production project in China that utilizes the highest CO content in its exhaust gas conversion process to date. In January 2022, the Administrative Approval and Government Services Bureau of Qianqi Chahar Right Wing, Ulanqab City, Inner Mongolia, issued a public notice regarding the registration of Xufeng Heyuan Chemical Co., Ltd.’s project aimed at utilizing the exhaust gases from its electric arc furnaces to produce new energy materials, as well as making use of carbon dioxide in various ways.
