As the title suggests, there is a very small hole in the middle of the liquid receiving tray in our plate tower; its diameter is approximately 2 centimeters. What is the purpose of this hole? And why aren’t the lengths of the downcomers the same? Sometimes they are long and sometimes short – why?
This is likely used for draining liquid when parking; under normal operating conditions, there should be no leakage.

This is called the “lacrimal pore”. Used to empty the downcomer when parking.
The design height of the downcomer is primarily determined by the need for bubble separation; in systems prone to foaming, where bubbles are difficult to separate, it is necessary to lengthen the downcomer in order to increase the residence time
The tray spacing generally determines the height of the downcomer; those with manholes or extraction hoppers usually have a larger spacing. And the area of the downcomer varies depending on the liquid residence time.
