When designing a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, attention must be paid to the flow rate (due to the presence of solid particles), otherwise blockages can occur; the amount of erosion caused by scouring also needs to be taken into account. Spiral plate heat exchangers are definitely not suitable for this purpose.

There are no issues with pressure, and they can be cleaned through acid treatment. In severe cases, disassembly for cleaning will ensure thorough cleaning. Tubular heat exchangers, on the other hand, tend to get clogged. In fixed-tube-sheet types, the fluid can only flow through the tube side; although the end caps can be removed for cleaning, cleaning inside the tubes is difficult and does not allow for thorough cleaning. For floating-head types, if the fluid is to flow through the shell side, the cost is higher, and both the tubes and the shell need to be protected against corrosion
