What is the purpose of the section of the pump outlet pipe that is thicker?

In one of our methanol towers, the bottom stream consists of wastewater (primarily water at 99.42%, butanol at 0.01%, DMM/DMF at 0.38%, GBL at 0.02%, MEOH at 0.05%, and TOLUENE at 0.13%). Right after the outlet valve of the bottom stream pump, there is a section of pipeline that is 20 CM long – it appears to be an expansion tube. What is the purpose of this? Why don’t other pump outlets have such pipelines? If anyone knows, please let me know. Thank you!
I wonder if it’s because of this. . It is used for installing instruments; for example, the probe of a thermometer needs to be inserted into a pipe, and if the pipe diameter is too small, it cannot be installed
Thicker pipelines are used when installing thermocouples and field instruments at the pump outlet; it’s possible that such instruments were considered in the original design
It is convenient to install temperature measurement instruments such as on-site bimetallic thermometers, remote-type thermocouples, and thermal resistors. There are requirements regarding the length of these instruments that can extend into the pipe; if this length is insufficient, the diameter of the pipe must be increased
