Generally, the first valve that is located near the medium side, and the one that comes into contact with the medium first, is called the primary valve, while the second valve is called the secondary valve. Its purpose is likely to be used during the maintenance of control valves.
It is a valve with redundancy arranged in series; if it is a backup valve, it is usually connected in parallel along with another valve. Those arranged in series are called the primary valve and the secondary valve. Depending on the direction of fluid flow, the one located upstream is called the primary valve, while the one located downstream is called the secondary valve. Generally, the primary valve operates under more severe conditions, but this is not always the case – it depends on the process requirements.
