The unit originally had a Milton Roy pump; the medium used was toluene mixed with silicone (an antifoam agent). The drive chamber and the diaphragm chamber were connected to each other. Mobil 630 gear oil was used, and the diaphragm was made of PVC. The diaphragms tended to get damaged frequently – in fact, the last time it operated for 10 hours, the diaphragm broke, and it felt harder than a new one. I’m not sure whether toluene or silicone has a greater corrosive effect on PVC, or if there’s some other reason – why did the diaphragm break so quickly?
It is recommended to compare the product quality to see if there has been any change in the diaphragm material.
Why is PVC being used? Usually, PTFE is used instead. Don’t understand?
The problem is that the original version comes with PVC components; the check valves at the inlets and outlets are also made of PVC. Additionally, the original large cover for the diaphragm chamber was made of rubber, and it ended up cracking, so it had to be replaced with one made of 304 material.
This is a selection issue; clearly, the medium and diaphragm are not compatible.
Experts suggest trying to use stainless steel instead of diaphragms. The results will be great!
