No, in the methyl acrylate plants I’ve been involved with, the reactors were not used for polymerization; polymerization took place recently in the purification tower
The reactor – I’m not sure. In any case, polymerization has occurred in the reaction tower where it is located; this happens when the reaction becomes unstable, and it’s necessary to shut down the system in such cases. So, a polymerization inhibitor is added to this methyl ester unit.
The methyl propionate polymerization I have experienced has been rather strange – it either takes place in the second column above the feed tray of the distillation tower, or in the gas-phase pipeline. While ensuring the presence of the inhibitor, it is necessary to increase the amount of air used for inhibition as much as possible; the inhibitor is ineffective in the absence of air. However, this is possible only on the condition that the vacuum level during vacuum distillation is maintained.
Reactor polymerization has not occurred, but I read a report stating that it was caused by incomplete water removal inside the reactor during operation; the exact reason is unknown.
