My English level is at a beginner stage; I study *equipment-related topics. Now I want to pursue further studies in this field, mainly through self-study. Where should I start? What kind of courses should I take, and which books are suitable? Everyone, please help out and give some feasible suggestions! Thank you!
First, master the professional English related to your own field – for example, know how to call various devices in English and be able to understand their English instruction manuals. At the beginner level, you need to set aside time to work with English every day, and it’s not easy to keep doing that consistently.
How about New Concept? It’s mainly because I’ve almost forgotten all my English! Ah! It seems quite useful now! If you want to learn, what should you do? ? ? ?
A few years ago, my company hired a teacher to train us on New Concept 4; the teaching method was pretty much the same as that of university professors. It’s possible to learn grammar, but it’s quite difficult to improve spoken language. It’s best to sign up for a class that matches your level; once you’ve spent the money, you’re forced to keep learning.
Self-study is the main approach; the main advantage of attending study groups, in my opinion, is meeting a group of people who are similar to oneself, allowing for mutual encouragement from time to time. Professional English is essentially professional knowledge combined with English; its foundation lies in English. Professional terms shouldn’t be difficult, after all, you work in this field. To learn basic English, one approach is to memorize the texts from New Concept English and then restate their meaning in one’s own words; this is what teachers used to teach us as recite and retell. For drawings, documents, bids, and the like, find something in authentic English and study it thoroughly – once you do that, you’ll be ahead of many people in this forum.
