After venting the distillation tower, should nitrogen be used to purge it first before steam is introduced into the tower? Is nitrogen purging necessary? Does it need to be possible to open the BD vent at the top of the tower during the steam introduction process? To what extent does it need to go before starting to vent oil and water, once the distillation tower is complete? I need an expert to give some guidance; ideally, a complete and detailed plan would be great.
Under normal circumstances, a tower that has been nitrogen-sealed after water distillation can be fed directly without the need for nitrogen purging.
After venting is complete, nitrogen is first used to push the combustible gases inside to the flare for venting. Once that is done, steam is used to treat the tower; the steam along with any remaining trace amounts of combustible gases are then discharged through the open flanges on the facility. It takes about 12 hours, or one night, for the tower to be treated in this way. Finally, nitrogen is used to purge the steam from the pipes and the tower
