MTO stands for (Methanol to Olefins; in short, MTO, which refers to the process of converting methanol into olefins. Generally, the consumption of methanol per ton of olefins is 2.6 to 3.4 tons. Coal-to-methanol is another process; the amount of coal required to produce one ton of methanol depends on the specific process used. “It depends on the process used, as well as whether steam and electricity are generated internally or supplied from outside. If everything is taken into account, including the case where steam and electricity are both produced internally, an optimized process setup allows for the production of 1 ton of methanol from 3.8 tons of coal (standard coal); approximately 1.45 tons of coal is needed as raw material, while 2.35 tons is required as fuel. The consumption will be higher if a batch-type fixed-bed process is used, as coal quality and the process itself can vary. According to reports, as of June 30, the Baotou Coal Chemical Branch had produced a total of 993,500 tons of MTO-grade methanol and 23,500 tons of high-purity methanol, in addition to 286,700 tons of polyolefin products. It is estimated that 3.46 tons of methanol are required to produce one ton of ethylene and propylene; this figure seems reasonable. I’m not sure whether the calculation method is correct, haha
2.5 tons of coal are required to produce one ton of methanol, of which about 1.4 tons are raw coal and 1.1 tons are fuel coal； 1 ton of olefins is produced from 3 tons of methanol.
It doesn’t really make much sense to ask how much methanol or olefins can be produced from 1 ton of coal; in fact, it’s impossible to give a precise answer, as different types of coal require varying amounts of consumption. In fact, when converted to standard coal, ideally 1 ton of standard coal can produce approximately 0.58 tons of methanol or 0.165 tons of olefins.
