When I first started working at a new factory, the masters often talked about the topic of edge-cutting operations. The yield is directly linked to their wages, so they all strive to perform the operations at the limit. But I’m not very familiar with this, so please share some of your own examples of how you use it. For example, in liquefied gas separation, when the product quality is satisfactory, it is possible to achieve a propylene content of zero at the bottom of the propylene tower and a propane content of zero at the top of the tower. However, the specific methods used to achieve this target, as well as the benefits in terms of energy savings and reduction of consumption, and any connections to other aspects of management, are matters that need to be considered
The so-called edge-managing operation refers to using the minimum reflux ratio to ensure that the product quality meets the required standards, thereby achieving the highest yield of the desired product and minimizing the energy consumption of the processing unit, thus maximizing its economic efficiency.
A practical example from our workshop: Product specification – dry point of naphtha: 150±2°C. Since the naphtha produced in our workshop is not sold externally, while diesel is sold, when diesel prices rise, in order to produce more diesel, our workshop keeps the dry point of naphtha at the lower limit of 148°C. This is an example of operating at the edge of the specified limits.
Could you explain how to assess edge-operating tasks? Is there any connection with the company’s management?
The unit evaluates yield and quality indicators. To achieve both high yields and satisfactory quality, operators must carry out their tasks with care, seeking the optimal operating parameters in terms of yield, quality indicators, and product stability. As for the management system, it involves providing material and spiritual rewards to those teams or individuals who operate meticulously and achieve good results, while offering criticism and supervision in contrast.

As I understand it, edge management is part of refined management; it involves achieving the goal of producing the desired product or reducing energy consumption to the greatest extent possible, even when the product or its parameters are close to the requirements specified in the process sheet. For example, operating at the edge of the parameters for fractional distillation products in order to maximize their boiling range and thereby increase yield, or raising the temperature of the products as close as possible to the upper limit in order to save on air cooling and water cooling – these are all examples of operating at the edge of the parameters!
My understanding is to achieve the greatest benefits with the lowest energy consumption. Carry out detailed work around this core.
