How should people in their 40s make a choice?

I have a friend who is 45 years old now. He used to work in the production of synthetic ammonia (for urea manufacturing), but he lost his job when the factory was shut down due to environmental regulations. Now he doesn’t know what to do; could anyone please suggest some ideas?
Since it’s about production, of course one should look for factories of the same type. It’s hard to change careers.
I’m unemployed too and don’t know what to do. What else would someone in the chemical industry do?
I feel the same way; I don’t know what to do. After turning 40, I have no idea what to do?????????
