Guizhou Pioneers the Transformation of New-Type Gasification Furnaces Author: Yan Junrong Source: China Chemical Industry News Date: 2012-08-01 Converting Multi-Feed Slurry Gasification Furnaces into Water-Cooled Wall Gasification Furnaces According to a report from Sinochem News Network, seven parties including Beijing Yingde Qingda Technology Company, Donghua Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., and Guizhou Xinsheng Coal Chemical Company signed a cooperation agreement at Donghua Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. at the end of July. All parties plan to complete, within half a year, the conversion of Guizhou Xinsheng Coal Chemical Company’s multi-feed slurry gasifier into a water-cooled wall gasifier for water-coal slurry, thereby carrying out the first transformation of a new type of gasifier in the world and establishing China’s leading position in the field of transforming such gasifiers globally. It is understood that the gasification project of Guizhou Xinsheng Coal Chemical Company originally used a multi-feed slurry gasification process, with an annual production capacity of 300,000 tons of methanol; it came online in December 2010. Due to the matching issue between multi-feed slurry gasifiers and coal types, this project has been using coal produced in Yunnan as its raw material, resulting in very high transportation costs. “Guizhou is rich in coal of its own, yet it uses coal from other places. In response to this, the coal chemical industry in Guizhou invited well-known experts from across the country in the fields of industry, academia, and research to discuss feasible plans for converting multi-feed slurry gasifiers into water-cooled wall gasifiers for water-coal slurry use, with the aim of achieving local sourcing of raw coal through such conversions. ”Ni Defei, vice chairman and general manager of Guizhou Shuicheng Mining Group, told reporters. It is understood that the ash melting point of the coal used by Shuicheng Mining Group is around 1450°C; multi-component slurry gasification furnaces are not suitable for coal with such a high ash melting point. In contrast, the coal used in the tests with water-cooled wall gasification furnaces for water-coal slurry has an ash melting point of over 1500°C, allowing for high-temperature continuous production using local coal. Seven parties involved in this renovation project have reached a cooperation agreement: Beijing Yingde Qingda Technology Company will provide process technical support, supply the water-cooled wall process package for coal-water slurry, and be responsible for ensuring the proper operation of the system in order to achieve the desired objectives ; Donghua Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. is responsible for the preliminary design, detailed engineering design, and on-site project management ; Harbin Boiler Factory is responsible for the modification of the equipment itself, including the cutting, grinding, welding, lifting, and installation of the multi-material slurry gasifier ; Shanxi Yangmei Fengxi Chemical Equipment Company is responsible for the production of the internal components for water-cooled wall gasifiers used in coal-water slurry processes ; Beijing Aerospace Petrochemical Technology Equipment Engineering Company is responsible for providing the new burners ; Luoyang Haiter Refractory Materials Company is responsible for supplying newly developed domestic refractory materials ; Guizhou Xinsheng Coal Chemical Company cooperates with all parties involved in the on-site construction, is responsible for training personnel, and ensures the proper operation of the system. Ma Hongbo, deputy general manager of Beijing Yingde Qingda Technology Company, told reporters: “This renovation is the first attempt in the history of the development of new coal gasification technologies in Guizhou, across China, and even around the world.” ”Throughout the world in the past, whether it was Texaco, Shell, or Ruchi furnaces, or multi-feed slurry gasifiers, space furnaces, or water-cooled wall gasifiers for water-coal slurry, new furnaces were always built; there has never been any precedent of converting one type of furnace into another using a new design. Fu Yuan, chairman of Guizhou Xinsheng Coal Chemical Company, is full of confidence in the renovation project: “We currently have 3 multi-feed slurry gasification units; we will start by renovating one of them first. If that is successful, we will not only proceed with the renovation of the second and third units as well, but we will also introduce new water-cooled wall gasification units for water-slurry feed, so as to raise our annual methanol production capacity to 1.2 million tons. This will enable Xinsheng Coal Chemical Company to become the largest methanol production facility in Guizhou and even in the southwestern region, while also allowing us to develop olefin products and achieve a transition toward higher-value products.” ”
