Nitrogen is a better choice; first, it does not produce condensate water, and second, it is inert and very safe.
There is a major problem with using nitrogen: at the lowest points or bends in the pipeline, liquid condensate accumulates. Using nitrogen to purge these areas is like using wind to blow over the surface of water – no matter how strong the wind, it can only cause surface ripples. Of course, this effect isn’t as extreme in pipelines, but when there is accumulated liquid, it’s difficult to clean it away using nitrogen purge. There is no such problem with steam.
The nitrogen consumption is very high; it’s better to use steam; In winter, be careful to prevent freezing and condensation.
