The main considerations are temperature, environmental factors, and insulation requirements.
If the space is limited, convenience of operation and ease of access also need to be taken into account
Outside, wind speed also needs to be taken into account; inside, this factor is not considered. Once the process requirements are met, the technical and economic viability should be assessed by considering factors such as operating costs, insulation costs, and heat losses.

From a technical perspective, different calculation methods are employed for various insulation purposes, and the factors taken into account in these calculations also vary. 1) The thickness of the insulation layer used to reduce heat loss from equipment and pipelines should be determined using the economic thickness method. 2) The thickness of the insulation layer used to reduce heat loss from equipment and pipelines shall be determined by means of the surface temperature method. 3) When the fluid is transported under permitted or specified temperature conditions, the thickness of the insulation layer shall be determined by means of the heat balance method. 4) The thickness of the insulation layer to prevent freezing of the fluid inside the pipe shall be determined by means of heat balance calculation. 5) The thickness of the insulation layer for equipment and pipes used to prevent scalding should be determined by calculation using the surface temperature method.
