I often hear about methylchlorosilane; it seems that large domestic companies such as Blue Star Fire, Xinan, and Hongda all have production capacities of over 100,000 tons per year for this substance. My question is: are there any well-known companies that produce phenylchlorosilane monomer? What is the current production situation? What is the production scale? Phenyl monomers: An undeveloped field in China 1. Phenyl monomers: Can significantly improve the properties of silicone materials. The main silicone monomers include methylchlorosilane (referred to as methyl monomer), phenylchlorosilane (referred to as phenyl monomer), methylvinylchlorosilane, ethyltrichlorosilane, propyltrichlorosilane, vinyltrichlorosilane, γ-chloropropyltrichlorosilane, and fluorosilicone monomers, among others. Among them, methylchlorosilane is the most important, accounting for over 90% of the total amount of monomers, followed by phenylchlorosilane. At present, the production of methylchlorosilane in China has reached a certain scale, and the product quality meets the requirements of general applications. Therefore, developing new high-performance silicone monomers, especially phenyl-based monomers, has become an important task for the development of China’s silicone industry. Phenylchlorosilane is a highly versatile intermediate. It can be used to prepare various coupling agents such as phenyltrimethoxysilane and diphenyldimethoxysilane, etc., and is also one of the important monomers for the production of silicone polymers. It plays a significant role in improving the properties of polyorganosiloxanes, particularly in enhancing the heat resistance, chemical stability, and radiation resistance of silicone products. Among silicone monomers, its usage and importance rank second, only behind methylchlorosilane. It is evident that researching it holds great significance. Methyl vinyl phenyl silicone rubber, abbreviated as phenyl silicone rubber, is produced by introducing diphenylsiloxane units (or **phenylsiloxane units) into the molecular chains of vinyl silicone rubber. Domestically produced phenyl silicone rubbers are mainly dimethyldiphenylvinyl silicone rubbers, which are typically synthesized by the rearrangement of diphenyl-containing cyclosiloxanes with dimethylcyclosiloxane and methylvinylcyclosiloxane under basic catalysis. **In addition to the properties of low compressive set, wide operating temperature range, oxidation resistance, heat resistance, shock absorption, and good electrical insulation that methyl vinyl silicone rubber possesses, base silicone rubber also features excellent resistance to low temperatures, burning, and radiation. It can be used in applications involving extreme temperatures, and serves as a key material for components in aerospace, aviation, electronics, engines, and industrial cryogenic equipment. **Phenylsilicone oil is produced using diphenyldichlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane as raw materials, with trimethylchlorosilane as a chain terminator, through processes such as hydrolysis and copolymerization catalyzed by alkali and tetramethylammonium hydroxide. **Silicone oils based on siloxane have a higher viscosity coefficient, as well as a lower freezing point and flash point, compared to dimethyl silicone oils with the same viscosity. Its compressive resistance is lower than that of dimethyl silicone oil, and its viscosity changes more rapidly under pressure. Its main advantages are high oxidation stability and radiation resistance. **Silicone oil can be used as a heat treatment bath for metal products and as high-temperature heating oil, as well as as a lubricant for high-temperature fan bearings, ball bearings, automobile engines, textile dryers, and more. Furthermore, it is also widely used in hydraulic instruments, electrical insulation, and other areas. **Phenylsilicone resins are primarily formed by the hydrolytic polycondensation of methyltrichlorosilane, dimethyldichlorosilane, phenyltrichlorosilane, and diphenyldichlorosilane. **Phenylsilicone resins are primarily used as impregnating varnishes for H-class motor and transformer coils, as high-temperature resistant coatings, and as impregnating materials for H-class insulating laminates, tubes, and rods in the electrical industry. They can also be transformed into reactive silicone resins with a low molecular weight and active functional groups, which are used to modify polyester, epoxy, phenolic, alkyd, and other types of silicone resins. 2. Market demand: The estimated annual demand exceeds 50,000 tons. In recent years, with further improvements in the production technologies for domestic **monomers and intermediates, progress has been made in the research of such products; however, there is still a gap compared to foreign products, and improvements are urgently needed. It is necessary to further intensify research on **monomer synthesis and separation technologies in order to improve the yield of **dichlorosilanes and the purity of the products ; At the same time, it expands the production scale of downstream **polydimethylsiloxane-based product lines, as well as research on new products and new synthesis processes, in order to broaden the range of applications and meet the needs of industries such as personal care products, plastic processing, life sciences, nuclear power plants, and the aviation industry. In terms of production, in recent years only a few companies in the country have established modest production capacities for phenylsilicon monomers, with a total capacity of around 5,000 tons. Moreover, the equipment in most enterprises operates in an unstable manner, preventing continuous production; in addition, indicators such as product purity are at relatively low levels. As a result, the domestic market for phenyl monomers remains relatively undeveloped. Due to the vast range of applications for phenyl-based products, the domestic market demand is currently met by foreign products. Based on the 1:20 ratio between the demand for phenyl-based products and methyl-based products, the domestic market demand for phenylsilane products is estimated to be around 50,000 tons per year. Based on the foregoing analysis, the companies that deserve special attention in the silicone industry are Hongda New Materials (002211), ST New Materials (600299), and Xinan Co., Ltd. (600596).
Last year, there were reports that Quzhou Ruilijie and Xinghuo had projects for producing phenyl monomers in the Xinghuo Industrial Park. It’s not clear what’s happening now. Phenyl monomers generally cannot be produced on a large scale using direct methods; or, if such methods are used, very high temperatures are required for the reaction to take place. Additionally, demand in the market isn’t very high, so few companies engage in this production. Nevertheless, there are some companies in China that do produce it
