For 14-mm-thick Q345R plates welded by submerged arc welding, should a groove be made or not? In practice, what are the welding parameters when no groove is made? For flaw detection and mechanical property tests, what is the pass rate for jobs that are welded without groove preparation?

For 14mm plate submerged arc welding, a Y-shaped groove should be created, and the root should be welded from the reverse side; this allows for full penetration. It is very difficult to achieve penetration without such a groove. Q345R is a low-alloy high-strength steel with a yield strength of over 450 MPa; the heat-affected zone may develop hard and brittle martensitic structure, resulting in reduced impact toughness, increased sensitivity to cold cracking, and poorer weldability. Measures to prevent hardening: Use a moderate wire energy in combination with appropriate preheating to achieve a sufficiently low welding cooling rate; it is recommended to use low-hydrogen electrodes for welding.

To ensure welding quality, grooves must be made, either V-shaped or Y-shaped; the welding quality of pressure vessels is of top priority.
