It was registered in September 2011, and the company uses its own alkyne-aldehyde method for BDO production. The project includes a 100,000-ton BDO production facility, a 30,000-ton dry acetylene production facility, 2 units capable of producing 130,000 tons of formaldehyde each, and a facility for producing hydrogen through methanol cracking, with a capacity of 8,000 tons per year. In the past two to three years, China has launched quite a number of 1,4-butanediol production projects, all of which are on a fairly large scale. It is estimated to be the result of some calcium carbide and coal chemical enterprises shifting to other production areas or pursuing diversification. It seems that the diglycol market will face problems in one or two years; overcapacity is just one aspect of the issue. If restrictions on the scale of calcium carbide production are imposed again, the impact will extend to these manufacturing processes as well.
What is the profit from 100,000 tons of BDO?
It also depends on how the product develops in downstream applications.
The alkyne-aldehyde method is becoming obsolete; the cost advantages of maleic anhydride esterification followed by hydrogenation are evident, and the technology developed by British company Davy will become the standard approach, so it’s hard to say what will happen in the future
