I work in the butyl octanol industry. It is estimated that by 2015, China’s production capacity for butyl octanol will exceed 2.5 million tons. There are many companies involved in this industry, including those under Sinopec and CNPC as well as local private enterprises; most of them have a production capacity of around 200,000 tons, and many of these companies produce and sell their product internally.
Hurry up and go; the 2-year period has already passed, and it will be hard to say anything if you delay
Isn’t it true that the price of butyl acetate has dropped sharply these days?
We are downstream users of butanol. According to my calculations, the production capacity of butyl acetate around 2015 would reach around 3.6 million tons, with this capacity being realized primarily in 2013 and 2014. OP, what growth rate do you expect for the demand for butyl alcohol by 2015?
The price has dropped compared to previous years, but it’s still not easy to buy them, as they still rely on imports
It’s really widespread; basically, it’s all low-pressure carbonylation processes, I guess
Stop adding more; there’s already too much capacity. By the time those companies that started operations in 2013-2014 go into full production, there will definitely be an overcapacity situation.
Currently, 8 companies in China produce butyl acetate, with a production capacity of 1.6 million tons; by next year this capacity is set to increase to over 3 million tons. Therefore, those who start production earlier next year will reap the greatest benefits. This year, sales involve upstream manufacturers waiting for downstream clients, while next year it will be the downstream clients waiting for upstream ones. In 2011, despite an increase in domestic production capacity, import volumes decreased slightly compared to 2010; it is estimated that import levels will be even lower by next year. Therefore, butyl cellosolve manufacturers must now start to explore export channels in order to stay ahead of other companies. The current operating rate of the downstream DOP industry is 50%, and the growth rate of octanol consumption will depend on the development of the plastics industry.
Overcapacity means the beginning of tragedy; there are too many such examples.
Plasticizers are also products that need to be phased out gradually; the demand for butanol still mainly depends on butyl acrylate, right? Currently, the main downstream products of butanol are n-butyl acetate (about 40%), butyl acetate (about 30%), DBP, and others. . . Butyl acetate has been on the decline, and there are many new acrylic and butyl acrylate production facilities coming online in the future; it is likely that demand will increase mainly in this area. Our company originally planned to do it, but it remained on hold all the time
