The circulating hydrogen compressor (piston type) has its medium mixed into the packing cooling water; it has been disassembled and reassembled many times yet the problem persists. Phenomenon: 1. It does not start up, and no medium was found to have seeped into the cooling water after pressurizing the interior of the device. 2. When the machine is started under no-load conditions and pressure exists inside the machine, it is detected that a medium has entered the cooling water. 3. There is no problem conducting a pressure test after inserting the filler box into the cylinder. The packing, packing box, O-rings, throttle sleeve, throttle sleeve gasket – even the gland was replaced – but leaks still occurred. I need help from someone knowledgeable! :'(
If you have time, please attach some pictures of the key parts so that the internal structure can be seen clearly. Also, what model of piston compressor do you have?

The poster can definitely build a test rig to test the water pressure before installation, and check whether the pressure reaches the operating pressure required by the cylinder. It’s possible that the end face of the stuffing box is not flat; rub it with red lead on the upper surface – if it is indeed not flat, then it will need to be ground using a grinding machine.
I’m not familiar with the equipment: I venture to guess – is it possible that the medium could cause corrosion in the relevant components?
Please clarify the level of pressure needed for suppression; it would be best to grind it again and then try assembling it – leakage should not occur anymore
Ensure there are no leaks; consider the cylinder block or buffer tank. Test for leaks in the cooling water system using pressure testing, and it’s best to conduct individual pressure tests for leak detection.
Check the cylinder liner for cracks; Are the pressure rings at the inner and outer ends of the cylinder liner loose?
How did you discover that medium gas had entered the cooling water? Was hydrogen escaping from the thermometer located at the higher point of the cooling water system? Is it the high temperature of the filler after startup that causes bubbles in the cooling water?
If hydrogen gets into the cooling water, it is because the packing boxes are not properly tightened to each other; as a result, slight axial movement of the packing boxes occurs after the machine is started up. Another issue is that the interference amount of the O-rings on the stuffing box is insufficient, or the machining precision of the stuffing box is inadequate.
Thank you all for your help. The pressure at that time reached 8.0 MPa, and the corroded packing box has been replaced. Could it really be a problem with the cylinder liner? It has been confirmed that there is a leak; the cooling water discharged has a very strong hydrogen sulfide odor, with concentrations reaching 300PPM – this has been measured. The filler boxes are all pressed very tightly, as they have been installed many times already; there can’t be installation problems every time. Ah! I’m so worried
