It mainly depends on your separation requirements; circuits with a ratio of just over ten are quite common! Generally, when high separation is required, the reflux ratio becomes very large. Of course, if the content of light components is very low, a reflux ratio of several hundred or even several thousand is perfectly fine. Sometimes it seems like the reflux ratio isn’t that important; it feels like the amount of reflux is more useful! :lol

The actual operating reflux ratio is determined during the design of the distillation column based on the minimum reflux ratio. Depending on the system being used, or on the separation requirements for the same system or variations in the feed composition, the minimum reflux ratio will vary; as a result, the operating reflux ratio also changes. It is not possible to specify a fixed range, but it is generally 1.25 to 2 times the minimum reflux ratio.
