Several issues arose in the DMF distillation process during the engineering project: 1. Since cyanide is used in the production process, it is necessary to displace the cyanide by adding an excess of ferric chloride for neutralization, which results in iron ions being present in the wastewater; 2. Copper ions are present during the production process. During the DMF distillation process, it was found that the acidity level was not up to standard. Could this be caused by the reasons mentioned above? How should it be addressed? I earnestly ask all experts for their guidance.
No way, could an excessive acidity level be due to the decomposition of DMF? It has nothing to do with 1 and 2!
My understanding is whether the presence of metal ions accelerates the decomposition of DMF? And that is at 110°C.
Dimethylformamide is unstable in the presence of strong bases such as sodium hydroxide or strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid (especially at high temperatures), and hydrolyzes to form formic acid and dimethylamine.
The friend on the 4th floor is correct; from my experience, pure DMF does not decompose at temperatures below 200 degrees! As for the impact of the presence of other ions, that’s unknown! I hope those who work in chemistry can explain this! !
DMF is distilled with chloroform; it decomposes at around 120°C. It’s not clear whether various ions are responsible for this or if it’s a reaction with chloroform
