Since graduating with a master’s degree in 2007, Xiao Shuo has been working in research and development at a state-owned enterprise; he holds a bachelor’s degree in polymer materials and a master’s degree in material processing. After six years of working, I haven’t had much exposure to chemical processing equipment and processes; my main role has been in research and development. I now want to switch to a career in process design, and I hope everyone can give me some advice and encouragement. . . .

The design industry is no leisurely job; one has to take responsibility
It took me six years at this job before I thought about changing careers. . . It’s a bit difficult; the design work isn’t as easy as one might think. There’s often a need to work overtime, and the salary at the beginning of one’s career is very low. The time required to develop skills is long – at least five years. Can you endure poverty during those initial years?
Try submitting your resume to design firms first. Since you work in an enterprise, spend more time in the workshops to learn about the production processes and equipment, build a foundation, and it’s best to get some hands-on experience as well. (It would be great if your company has a design institute; apply to transfer there. It’s best if I don’t have to change companies.)

If I want to have some free time, my current job is fine. I really do want to learn something, but research and development has really lost my interest. .
I really want to understand many things now. . . One should keep learning throughout life; although I realize this a bit late, at least I won’t go on living in confusion anymore.
Change careers; stop working in R&D – it has no future at all............. except for those working at R&D centers of foreign companies
