My explanation is as follows: the gate is a single unit, and there is a T-shaped groove at the junction between the gate and the valve stem. The head of the valve stem features two symmetrical square grooves that fit perfectly with the T-shaped groove. There are guide grooves on both sides of the gate, which allow it to move up and down within the valve body without deviating from the center of the valve body.
It seems that the poster is referring to a hidden-stem gate valve. In the case of a hidden-stem gate valve, the component in question is called the valve stem nut. For a visible-stem gate valve, there are no other such components; generally, the valve stem’s trapezoidal groove fits directly into the trapezoidal groove of the gate.
Gate valves come in two types: those with visible stems and those with hidden stems; it should be referred to as a limit block
