Following the commencement of construction in Hukou County in April this year for a project aimed at producing 30,000 tons of methanol fuel per year, another methanol fuel production facility with an annual output of 2 million tons was established on the Yanjiang Industrial Base in Xunyang District of Jiujiang City on the 28th. Once both projects are put into operation, Jiujiang City’s annual methanol fuel production capacity will reach 2.03 million tons, making it the largest methanol fuel production base in Jiangxi and even in the East China region. 　　Jiangxi vehicles will soon be able to use inexpensive and environmentally friendly methanol fuel. Jinfeng (Jiangxi) Petrochemical Co., Ltd., a joint venture established with investment from Shanghai Lijing Industrial Development Co., Ltd., South Korean NESGO Co., Ltd., and South Korean Huisung Urban Development Co., Ltd., will acquire 200 mu of land in the Yanjiang Industrial Zone in Xunyang District, Jiujiang City, and invest 500 million yuan to build a production facility for methanol fuel. 　　Construction on this project will begin next May, with completion and operation expected by March 2009. Upon completion of the project, the annual production of methanol gasoline (diesel) will reach 2 million tons, generating an output value of 10 billion yuan, which is equivalent to two-fifths of Jiujiang Petrochemical’s annual crude oil processing capacity. By then, vehicles in Jiangxi will be able to use cheap and environmentally friendly methanol fuel. Therefore, once this project is put into operation, it will change the supply landscape of the fuel market in Jiangxi and even the East China region, turning Jiujiang into an important hub for new alternative energy sources. 　　It is the right time to develop methanol fuel. “Currently, international oil prices are high, and oil imports for the whole of this year will reach 200 million tons.” Under these circumstances, it is highly timely to vigorously develop the coal-based methanol fuel industry. ”Experts from the Jiujiang Development and Reform Commission described the bright prospects for methanol fuel in this way. 　　It is said that the overall safety of using methanol fuel is higher than that of gasoline. In addition, it has two notable features: first, it is environmentally friendly, as the use of methanol fuel can **reduce exhaust pollution**. Secondly, it saves money; compared to using 93-octane gasoline, using methanol fuel can save around 30% in costs per 100 kilometers.
