How do you use domestic and international databases?

I would like to ask how everyone uses domestic and international databases? There are many forums and online resources on databases, but while there are plenty of links, what are the actual steps for practical use? Want to learn *learn* (for free). It’s best to give an example.
Ah, some databases can only be used internally. I wonder if there’s any way around this; it would be fine even if one could just browse them!
