Based on annual production volume, synthetic ammonia produced in quantities of over 300,000 tons is generally referred to as large-scale nitrogen production; that produced between 100,000 tons and 300,000 tons is considered medium-scale nitrogen production; and that produced in amounts below 100,000 tons is classified as small-scale nitrogen production

Previously, it was classified based on the annual ammonia production capacity: those with over 300,000 tons were considered large nitrogen producers； Over 50,000 tons and below 300,000 tons is classified as medium nitrogen ； Below 50,000 tons is referred to as small nitrogen ； With the development of the industry, it is no longer possible to make a distinction; since the second half of 2007, they are no longer separated and are collectively referred to as nitrogen fertilizers. The large, medium, and small nitrogen fertilizer associations have all been dissolved and merged into the Nitrogen Fertilizer Association.
