Treatment of tower manholes

Our company’s distillation unit has been upgraded from float valve trays to sieve tray trays. Due to negligence or other reasons, the downcomers of these sieve tray trays are too long, preventing the access panel for entering the tower. How is it best to handle it in order to put it in? Changing a floating valve column to a sieve plate column should simply involve replacing the trays; why would the liquid drop pipes need to be altered?
