As a vehicle fuel, dimethyl ether buses have also entered the demonstration phase in Shanghai, with further expansion expected. In recent years, the domestic dimethyl ether industry has developed rapidly; by the end of 2007, the total national production capacity was set to exceed 1 million tons. The total production capacity of dimethyl ether, which is currently under planning and construction, exceeds 10 million tons. Domestic companies such as Jutai, XinAo, Sinopec, China National Coal Group, Shanxi Lanhua Kechuang, Sichuan Lutianhua, Hubei Tianmao, and Shanghai Huayi have all gotten involved. Among them, the first-phase projects of Jiutai and Newao for producing million-ton amounts of dimethyl ether, located in the Yangtze River International Chemical Industrial Park in Zhangjiagang, will be completed and put into operation by the end of 2007.
