I would like to ask control industry professionals: can a flow meter measure the amount of material flowing back and forth? In other words, does the flow meter measure flow in only one direction, or can it perform calculations for both forward and backward flows?
High-precision Coriolis mass flow meters can achieve this. By setting it, it is possible to measure forward flow, reverse flow, and bidirectional flow; by also setting the cumulative value, the net flow rate can be determined, thus achieving your goal.

Electromagnetic flowmeters can also measure flow in both forward and reverse directions, and accumulate the values for each direction separately.
