It has been found that the amount of water used in operating the water ring vacuum pump is quite high; with the inlet valve fully open, a flow rate of 5 tons per hour can be achieved. Moreover, the wastewater generated needs to be heated before disposal, as hexane gas is used for vacuum creation, and this causes the pump to corrode easily. Now, we are considering using mineral oil or edible oil instead of water for operating the pump, in a closed-loop system. We would like to know whether this is feasible. Thank you everyone

It should work. For the circulating liquid in a liquid ring vacuum pump, it is sufficient that its vapor pressure is very low at that vacuum level, so that it does not easily vaporize. Additionally, it is sufficient that the circulating fluid is immiscible with the vacuuming medium.

Under operating conditions, any oil medium with a saturated vapor pressure higher than that of water should work, but it is necessary to ensure that its corrosivity is low and that it does not react with the material being handled.
It is necessary to take into account the issue of reduced vacuum level caused by hexane dissolving in the working fluid; therefore, it is advisable to be cautious. If the heat exchange of the working fluid poses difficulties, then an oil-free piston vacuum pump could be considered. The energy consumption of the two types of pumps is similar, but the oil-free piston pump is much more convenient to use.
