The cold gas efficiency is the ratio of the chemical energy of the gas generated by gasification to the chemical energy of the coal used for gasification. The chemical energy of gas and coal can be expressed using their respective lower heating values. Simply put, it is the gasification efficiency that does not take into account the sensible heat of gas and the recovery of waste heat. Clearly, improving the cold gas efficiency of the gasifier means converting more of the chemical energy contained in the coal into the chemical energy of the gas.
