We use hydrogen produced by the chlor-alkali plant for our hydrogenation project; the hydrogen is pressurized after passing through a hydrogen compressor, and a check valve is installed at the outlet of the compressor. The problem is that this check valve is of the lift-type, and its valve core moves up and down, producing a noticeable noise. What concerns us isn’t the noise itself, but the fact that hydrogen is a highly flammable and explosive substance. The impacts resulting from such movement of the valve core could be extremely detrimental to safe operation, and we are always worried that an accident might occur someday. The explosion potential of hydrogen has certain limits; I’m not sure what concentration of hydrogen you are using. As long as it remains within the safe range, there should be no problem.

If the valve core is removed, it is no longer called a check valve

I agree with the explanation provided by jhcsjczj; we later sought technical advice from the relevant electrochemical plants, and they did just that, achieving satisfactory results after years of use.
As long as the purity of hydrogen is within acceptable levels, there’s no need to worry even if sparks are generated due to internal impacts on the valve components: lol. However, it’s still unsettling when such things happen in a hydrogen system. I agree with what was said above, but doing that only makes the sound quieter. I think the problem might lie in the design. Is the up and down movement of the check valve’s disc during operation related to the flow rate? The size of the outlet pipes and check valves should also be selected based on the actual flow rate. I don’t know much about this area, so I won’t say much
Our company’s previous check valves were of the lift-type, just like yours, with the valve core moving up and down, which produced a fairly noticeable noise. After changing it to a horizontal design, the above phenomenon disappeared.
As long as the hydrogen concentration and pressure are well controlled and there are no leaks, it should not be a problem. But it’s of course better if it can be corrected.
The function of a check valve is to prevent a large amount of gas from flowing back in the event that the hydrogen compressor stops suddenly, thereby avoiding vibrations in the compressor; I think this is necessary. As for the issue you raised, it makes sense as well – considering replacing the valve core with copper or some other material that does not generate sparks. In fact, pure hydrogen will not explode as long as no air gets into it.
The instability of the hydrogen pressure causes pulsations in the valve inside the check valve; this does not occur if a constant pressure is maintained. This pressure is merely unstable between the pump and the check valve, and it does not have a significant impact on the pressure downstream
The vibration of the valve element in the check valve at the hydrogen compressor outlet is likely caused by unstable pressure control at the compressor outlet; it is necessary to check whether the return pipeline is too small.
