I am currently facing the challenge of dealing with a type of wastewater that contains 0.5% benzoic acid; I intend to use membrane separation techniques to recycle both benzoic acid and water. What is not certain at the moment is: which membrane to use, nanofiltration or reverse osmosis? Since benzoic acid will precipitate in large quantities when its concentration is too high, and as it is an organic substance, could it cause severe blockage of the membrane pores and lead to a rapid decrease in the membrane’s flux? To the best of my knowledge, there is no mature technology yet for treating wastewater containing benzoic acid using membrane separation or reverse osmosis, but the method of complexation extraction has been reported.

0.5% benzoic acid can be used for the adsorption by resins to recover organic matter. If higher standards are required for the reclaimed water, further treatment can be carried out; if the standards are not strict, the water can be used directly, which reduces operating costs.
