Glass furnaces and steam boilers are two fundamentally different types of furnaces. Glass furnaces come in types that operate continuously, such as horseshoe flame furnaces and cross-flame furnaces, as well as those that operate intermittently, such as crucible furnaces. The fuel can be oil, natural gas, water gas, or coal, depending on the type of furnace. Since the flue gas temperature in continuously operating regenerative or cross-flame kilns is relatively high, and it remains high even after heat exchange in the regenerator, an exhaust heat boiler can be used to generate steam, thereby achieving further energy savings.

The refractory materials used in glass furnaces and steam boilers are also different; glass furnaces are generally constructed using silica bricks with good acid resistance, while steam boilers typically use clay bricks or high-alumina refractory linings; Glass furnaces are used continuously, while steam boilers can be used intermittently.
