Brief answer: 1. The ammonia synthesis and urea production units at Sinopec Hubei Fertilizer Branch are among the 13 large-scale fertilizer production units introduced from abroad in the 1970s. The original design used natural gas as the fuel, but due to a shortage of available natural gas, diesel and heavy oil were later used instead. After numerous technical upgrades, it has now achieved a production capacity of 330,000 tons of synthetic ammonia and 570,000 tons of urea per year. 2. To reverse the unfavorable situation of Hubei Fertilizer Branch, Sinopec Group decided to replace oil with coal as the fuel for that plant’s raw materials and fuels. The renovation of the fuel pipeline was completed and put into use in 2000. On October 28, 2003, the coal-to-oil conversion project, with an estimated total investment of 1.256 billion yuan, began construction, and it was completed and brought into operation on December 29, 2006. 3. The main construction content of the project is to build a SHELL pressurized powder coal gasification unit with a coal feeding capacity of 2,000 t/d; in terms of the production capacity of this gasification unit alone, it has the capability to produce 500,000 tons of synthetic ammonia per year. 4. Since the trial production of the \"coal instead of oil\" unit at Hubei Fertilizer, the company has encountered many unexpected difficulties. The answer above is great; the original raw material is natural gas. CNPC’s natural gas pipeline runs alongside their facility, but due to the relationship between Sinopec and CNPC, CNPC restricted Hubei Dahuahua from using their natural gas for various reasons, which led to the subsequent change in fuel source. (It is understood that Sinopec plans to lay its own gas pipeline; it’s not clear whether this is true or not.)
If Chinese nitrogen fertilizer manufacturers are unable to keep the SHELL furnaces operating continuously for more than 180 days, it is easy to predict that SHELL gasification furnaces will never experience peace in China.
