1. When the equipment is started up or shut down, its temperature and pressure may drop or rise sharply. At this time, the damage to the equipment mainly comes from sudden changes in temperature. When the temperature changes rapidly, the equipment is subjected to sudden cooling or heating, which causes it to expand or contract sharply and ultimately leads to damage (examples include a rapid drop in operating temperature to ambient temperature, or a rapid rise in ambient temperature to the operating temperature). 2. When the equipment is operating normally, its various parameters reach a steady state; thermal expansion occurs only due to changes in the operating temperature of the equipment (which generally isn’t very large, and the equipment itself can withstand such changes), so significant thermal expansion does not take place. 3. Therefore, the start-up and shutdown of the equipment should be carried out gradually and slowly (that is, the temperature and pressure should decrease or increase slowly), so as to avoid damaging the equipment. 4. Sudden increases or decreases in pressure can also cause equipment damage, but their impact is much less severe than that of sudden temperature changes.
