The oil refining industry is home to many technical experts who possess advanced skills in specific areas of this industry; they enjoy high salaries and don’t place much importance on money, treating their work as if it were a form of entertainment – something that’s beyond the imagination of ordinary people! Some people say: I worked in shifts for XX years, in various positions for XX years, in the technical team for XX years, and so on – it seems like a big deal. Actually, what’s the difference? It’s still the same – you get a salary, have fixed working hours, and lack freedom of movement. Here are two examples I know. A few years ago, a friend who didn’t want to work at the Fushun Design Institute decided to try his luck elsewhere. He was very smart; even before leaving, he had paid close attention to all the design materials available at the institute, and he brought them all with him. To conceal his intentions, he found another design institute as a cover, establishing a branch of this institute in Qingdao, and from there he sold the materials from the Fushun Institute at low prices. Over the years, as local refineries in Shandong were built and expanded, this guy really shone! Design fees for things like accelerated processing, hydrogenation, reforming, and so on were offered at low prices, allowing them to make a huge profit! Eating and drinking extravagantly every day, waiting for a life of luxury with fine wine and music – what a happy and carefree existence! What was mentioned above refers to negative characters; everyone should not follow their example. On the positive side: there is a senior technical engineer at a large refinery who is over 45 years old. He is highly skilled in process management; he has been involved in all the plant’s technical upgrades and improvement projects, taking notes on each one. He also attends the annual technical conferences, which has enabled him to accumulate vast experience and expertise! After coming out, the first thing he did was to get a catalytic process up and running at a local refinery in Shandong; it started operating smoothly without any problems. The boss thought that refining oil wasn’t a complicated task and that no special skills were needed for it, so a few days later he found an excuse to get rid of him. Production problems and accidents may arise over time, forcing the boss to bring this worker back. The boss now knows: what a technical authority is, and what a true expert in technology is! There’s another person: he’s in his 50s, has hardly any hair on his head, but he’s an excellent worker! I’ve been working on compressor repairs at the refinery! He was of top caliber; after retiring, refineries across Shandong took turns inviting him as a guest of honor. Why? As we all know, most of the compressors in use today, especially pneumatic compressors, are of foreign origin. This field has been studied in depth for many years, and there are specific methods for their maintenance. The large-scale equipment in oil refineries is of utmost importance; if it malfunctions and stops working, it’s impossible to achieve any efficiency. In recent years, oil refineries in Shandong province have been installing such equipment one after another, which makes compressor maintenance a crucial task. The worker said himself that he hadn’t been home for over a year; he was holding the latest and most advanced business phone, and he had food, clothing, and things to entertain himself with. Yes, it’s difficult to become one of the best, but nowadays society is very impetuous; some former leaders from the Petroleum Ministry act like experts, spouting nonsense all day long just to earn some expert fees. Compared to those technical experts mentioned by the original poster, those people are utterly insignificant. How much hard work it takes to become an expert is something others don’t know; as the saying goes, \"One minute on stage requires ten years of practice off stage\" :)
Gain experience, learn more skills, and get ready to go
I think the best performers in any industry can be divided into several categories: those with practical operational experience, those who are innovative and theoretical thinkers, and those who are skilled in management; none of these elements can be lacking. If you ask the people in the research institute to carry out the operations, they surely won’t be able to do it; and if you ask the operators to invent a catalyst, that’s likely impossible as well. It’s good to choose the right people for the right positions.

Everyone wants to become an expert and a standout in their field. But no one dares to call themselves an expert. Understanding an industry takes time, as well as patience and perseverance. But no matter how hard one tries, a person’s energy is always limited; the best one can achieve is to learn a little more than others, but it’s impossible to become an expert.
