In terms of scale, the regulations set by the National Development and Reform Commission require that coal-based methanol production be at least 1 million tons. As a result, the extremely high investment costs mean that only large, financially strong enterprises and conglomerates are able to get involved in coal-based methanol production. Converting coke oven gas into methanol falls under the category of resource utilization and environmental protection; it is better to make use of it rather than letting it be burned away uselessly. Moreover, it seems there is no limit on scale, but new projects are generally over 100,000 tons. In terms of cost, coal-based systems require investment starting from gasification. For methanol production from coke oven gas, it only needs to start with purification and desulfurization. Of course, there are many other factors to consider, but intuitively, doesn’t it seem that producing methanol from coke oven gas has some advantages? I hope to hear everyone's valuable opinions.
Coke oven gas represents the recovery of resources that were previously wasted (off-gas). The largest facilities currently under construction have a capacity of 300,000 tons, while four facilities have already been built, with capacities of around 100,000 to 200,000 tons each. In terms of scale, it is said that for coal-to-methanol production, the capacity must be over 1 million tons; however, most projects are built in phases. The so-called 1 million tons capacity refers to several plants, each with a capacity of 300,000–500,000 tons. Datang in Inner Mongolia might have a larger capacity on its own. In terms of scale, coal is definitely larger than coke ovens ; As for the benefits, there are many factors involved, and a case-by-case analysis is required; it cannot be generalized. If coke oven gas doesn’t account for much in terms of costs, then the cost of methanol must also be low. As far as I know, the cost of producing methanol from coke oven gas can be below 700 yuan ; But coal-based methanol costs around 1,000 yuan at the very least. :lol
1. In terms of cost, the production of methanol from coke oven gas is definitely cheaper than using any other method. The figures calculated by the design institute indicate that the cost per ton of methanol is around 800 yuan. 2. From an investment perspective, methanol production from coke oven gas also requires less capital investment than that from coal-based methods, as the cost of constructing a gasifier is avoided. At the same time, the construction period is also short. 3. In terms of cost and investment, methanol production from coke oven gas has a greater competitive advantage.
