Our company uses methanol washing followed by methanation; when the ammonia chiller associated with the methanol washing unit fails, the feed to the upstream system is immediately reduced, or gas is vented before it enters the methanol washing unit after the shift reaction. The load of the methanol wash unit is about 40% of full capacity, providing sufficient time to inspect and restart the ammonia chiller; this time has at times exceeded two hours. Load has no effect on methanation. As for the cleaning with liquid nitrogen, it requires the expertise of those familiar with this process.
