The main sealing element of a rubber diaphragm-sealed dry gas holder (also known as a Wiggins gas holder) is a rubber diaphragm; inside this diaphragm is canvas, and acrylonitrile rubber is applied to its outer surface. The thickness of this diaphragm varies depending on the pressure level, with a typical thickness of 3 millimeters. This type of sealing device has strict requirements regarding the composition of the gas entering the holder – elements such as sulfur, benzene, and toluene present in gases like coke oven gas or blast furnace gas can be highly destructive to the rubber. Excessive levels of these substances can cause the rubber layer to separate from the canvas, thereby rendering the rubber diaphragm ineffective at providing sealing. Therefore, when designing this type of gas holder, it is essential to include devices for removing impurities from the gas as well as systems for analyzing its composition.
