I am currently working on the process design for a storage tank for concentrated sulfuric acid. There is no existing PID reference available for this purpose, as the tank is made of carbon steel; therefore, its design differs from that of ordinary tanks. Could anyone provide me with the process design details for their storage tanks used for concentrated sulfuric acid?

Our company’s alkali slag treatment equipment and systems for adjusting the pH value of circulating water both use concentrated sulfuric acid. The tanks used to store this acid are made of carbon steel, and the section from the tank to the pump inlet is also made of carbon steel. These systems have been in use for nearly a year, and we are satisfied with their performance. However, it is crucial to ensure that there is no leakage of water, nor should diluted sulfuric acid be used, as this would cause immediate corrosion.
How large is the sulfuric acid storage tank? Should one use 98% acid or 93% acid? Under normal circumstances, if the temperature of the acid is not high, ordinary carbon steel is sufficient. If the storage tank has a large capacity, such as over 800 tons, it is generally necessary to install an emergency acid discharge system. In this case, the acid discharge outlet should be located at the bottom of the tank; it’s better not to have manholes in the tank body itself, but rather to place them on the top, as this reduces the risk of leaks. If 98% acid is used, insulation should be added to the pipelines. Acid discharge valves are usually designed with two stages, and ball valves are often preferred.
Ordinary carbon steel will do; our factory’s 1,000-ton units have been in use for 10 years without any problems, and some have even been in use for 15 years with no issues either. Paint is applied only once a year, and insulation isn’t necessary for the pipelines (in the south). I recommend using globe valves instead; instead, opt for stop valves lined with PTFE, such as those of the “Tongming” brand. The units in our factory have been in use for 9 years without any problems – they are very reliable.
