During this maintenance work on our converter, we found that the beams supporting one of the catalyst trays were bent so much that they were touching the ceiling panel. I plan to replace those beams and install a support in the middle of the ceiling panel. I would appreciate everyone’s advice on whether this is a viable solution. A section located at the bottom of the converter? Has the outlet temperature been above 600 degrees for an extended period of time?
The temperature should not exceed 600 degrees either; it’s likely that the strength of the beams and supports is insufficient. Check the design drawings to see if the actual structure matches the design. If it does, recalculate the strength of the beams before deciding on which type of beam to use. When selecting steel, it is advisable to choose products from reputable manufacturers to ensure sufficient strength.
Our unit’s section is also located at the bottom of the converter; during the major maintenance in August this year, inspections were carried out, and the verticality of the columns, the deformation of the beams, and the condition of the catalyst were all normal. It’s possible that the strength of your company’s beams is insufficient.

Please provide more detailed information: 1. Where is the first section of the converter, is it at the bottom of the converter? 2. Is the concentration of the flue gas after conversion above 9%? Otherwise, an exit section shouldn’t be this high. 3. Is there a problem with the airflow distribution in a certain section of the bed, resulting in excessively high local flue gas temperatures at the outlets?
Currently, the outlet temperature design for many units is set at 610–620°C; to ensure long-term stable operation, it is best to use stainless steel materials (such as SS304H/316?) for manufacturing the girders. Carbon steel definitely won’t work, and cast iron will also bend.
