As reported by Global Energy Network on December 14, 2007, a laboratory in Santa Clara, USA, is developing a device that can \"reproduce energy\" through a chemical process of converting carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide, using solar energy to reverse the combustion process. The generated carbon monoxide can be used to produce hydrogen and assist in the synthesis of liquid fuels. This device, called a reverse-rotation reception reaction restorer (abbreviated as CR5), breaks the carbon-oxygen chain in carbon dioxide and reassembles it in two steps to produce carbon monoxide and oxygen. Converting carbon dioxide into fuel using sunlight is the main way to carry out this reaction. The research team named this reaction “from sunlight to fuel” (s2p). “\"Liquid solar fuel\" refers to the final products produced, such as methanol, gasoline, etc. Rizi Di, the inventor of the Cr5 device, said that the idea was initially to break down carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and oxygen, in order to ultimately produce liquid fuel. According to Global Energy Network, this device can truly reduce carbon dioxide emissions while allowing people to maintain their *habit of using fuel. What’s exciting about this invention is that it can utilize carbon dioxide twice, which means it helps to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere and decreases the use of fossil fuels. For example, the carbon dioxide produced by burning coal is recovered and fed into a CR5 device to produce carbon monoxide. Then carbon monoxide can be used as an initial reactant to produce gasoline, aircraft fuel, methanol, or almost any liquid fuel.
