About TPM

Let me explain what TPM is: TPM stands for Total Productive Maintenance, which refers to the concept of comprehensive production management. It originated in the 1960s in the United States with PM (Preventive Maintenance). Through further development and innovation by the Japanese, TPM as a company-wide approach was established in 1981, and it achieved great success in Japan. Subsequently, it was adopted around the world. The first TPM World Conference was held in Tokyo, Japan, in 1991, with over 700 participants from 23 countries. Swedish company VOLVO and Singaporean company NACHI INDUSTRIES PTE.LTD. became the first companies outside of Japan to obtain TPM certification. In Asia: South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia; in Europe: Sweden, France, Italy, Finland, Norway; in the United States: hundreds of companies such as Ford and P&G; in South America: Brazil, Colombia. Thousands of companies around the world have adopted it and achieved stunning results. In Shenzhen and the coastal areas, some foreign-funded and private enterprises are already carrying out TPM initiatives. Definition of TPM: An advanced equipment management system is one of the most powerful tools supporting the production systems of manufacturing enterprises. It ensures that production plans are carried out on schedule and enables timely response to customers’ market demands. At the same time, it helps to reduce a company’s manufacturing costs, such as those associated with inventory buildup, maintenance, and other administrative costs (labor, time). It also helps to minimize the occurrence of defective products. By doing so, maintenance is elevated from being merely a cost management aspect to becoming one of the key factors in enhancing a company’s competitiveness, ultimately contributing to an increase in the company’s economic value. TPM activities involve the participation of all employees and teamwork to establish and maintain an excellent equipment management system, thereby increasing the uptime (utilization rate) of equipment, enhancing safety and quality, and ultimately improving the operational efficiency of the production system as a whole. Components of TPM: The TPM practiced by advanced companies in today’s world is known as Total Productive Maintenance, and it consists of two components (see Figure 1) – total preventive maintenance and total predictive maintenance. During the process of introducing and implementing TPM, the performance of equipment OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) (see Figure 2) is used as a monitoring indicator to drive continuous and steady improvements, thereby maximizing the benefits that the equipment generates for the company.
