According to reports dated November 24, the South Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy stated on November 22 that the country has recently discovered potentially huge reserves of natural gas hydrates in waters off its eastern coast. According to South Korea’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, this newly discovered natural gas hydrate field is located in waters 135 kilometers northeast of Pohang Port, a city on South Korea’s coast facing the Sea of Japan. It has been confirmed that the thickness of the natural gas hydrates in this gas field is approximately 130 meters. The South Korean Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said that the thickness of the natural gas hydrates discovered at this new location is far greater than that of the natural gas hydrates found by Japan, India, and China in the past.
