I’ve just started working in design and haven’t been to the construction site to see how work is carried out, so I’ve always been curious about how the workers follow our design drawings. They can’t possibly cut the pipes according to the dimensions shown in our schematic diagrams, right? If that were the case, and if the designs aren’t very accurate, then wouldn’t it be impossible to install the pipes? Could everyone discuss how pipeline construction is carried out on site?

For example, when it comes to connecting pipes made of composite materials, the design drawings do not show the details of these connections, but subtle differences in implementation can lead to completely different results
I work in on-site construction. Generally, process pipelines come with schematic diagrams, and workers cut the materials according to those diagrams. However, it’s not possible to cut everything precisely; there needs to be a margin or opening in each of the east-west, north-south, and up-down directions. The actual length of the material to be used is determined after measurements are taken on site. In contrast, prefabricated components are cut exactly according to the dimensions specified in the drawings. Moreover, there is strict control over the quality of the materials used. If the dimensions specified in the design aren’t accurate enough, it not only leads to mismatches but can also cause delays in the project timeline. Therefore, those who create the designs must be thorough and strive for precision. :(
I basically agree with what was said on floor 9: the design certainly needs to be as accurate as possible, but it’s by no means necessary to achieve perfect precision. There will always be openings during on-site construction, and pipes cannot be made too long either; therefore, slight deviations in length and height are not a problem.
The prefabrication of pipelines at construction sites is mostly based on single-line diagrams; therefore, your design must be as complete as possible. Meanwhile, designers need to visit the site frequently, rather than creating designs in an office under ideal conditions.

We should still trust the technical skills of our construction workers. Although some of the drawings are indeed rather rough, and some of them are merely schematic illustrations showing general principles, as long as there are no fundamental errors, we are generally able to carry out the construction properly. The only issue is that it reduces the depth of prefabrication, which is not conducive to improving work efficiency. I have another question for those working in design: do you usually produce single-line diagrams along with the construction drawings? Why don’t most of the projects I’ve worked on come with line drawings? This creates a huge amount of work for us when it comes to preparing the as-built drawings, as line drawings are required for the handover of pressure pipelines, and weld numbers must be indicated on those drawings. As a result, we have to create our own line drawings, which, due to various constraints, are often not drawn in a proper manner.
If the size is large, there will be no problem; just set up the field port in the single-line diagram.
